What is Iaith Athrawon Yfory?

Iaith Athrawon Yfory is a grant offered by the Welsh Government to increase the number of Welsh-speaking teachers in Wales. 

Up to £5,000 is available for students undertaking a Secondary PGCE programme (a Postgraduate Certificate in Education) in any subject through the medium of Welsh, or for students choosing to teach Welsh as a subject. 

Who is eligible for Iaith Athrawon Yfory?
The grant is available to students undertaking a full-time or part-time Secondary PGCE programme.

To be eligible for the grant, you must:

  • follow an eligible programme*
  • not already be a qualified teacher when starting the course 
  • not be employed to teach in a school or other establishment as a teacher
  • not be a participant in training organised under an employment-based teacher training scheme including the Salaried PGCE (The Open University)

* For a PGCE programme to qualify, it must:

  • be accredited by the Initial Teacher Education Accreditation Board (The Education Workforce Council)
  • lead to Qualified Teacher Status in Wales
  • enable the student to teach in a secondary school through the medium of Welsh, or to teach Welsh as a subject

How to get the grant?

You will need to complete a registration form by 31 March during your year of study. After that, further forms will need to be completed within one year of gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), and again within a year of completing your induction year.

When are the payments made?


The grant is paid in two instalments.
The first payment of £2,500 is paid upon completion of a Secondary PGCE programme leading to QTS. 
The second payment is paid after successfully completing the Induction Period in a Welsh-medium or bilingual secondary school, or whilst teaching Welsh as a subject in any secondary school in Wales.
