DescriptionThe Estates Department is responsible for reactive and planned maintenance of College buildings, large capital projects, minor works, legislative compliance, environmental management, estates data, Catering, Campus Offices, Transport and grounds maintenance. The post provides an exciting and challenging opportunity for pro-active and innovative person within the Estates Department of Coleg Sir Gâr and Coleg Ceredigion.

The Carpentry (Multi-Skilled) Technician plays a pivotal role within the Estates team of the college. This position involves overseeing and executing a wide range of skilled carpentry tasks, maintenance activities, and technical repairs essential for maintaining the college's facilities at across all 7 sites. The ideal candidate will possess a diverse skills set encompassing carpentry expertise along with proficiency in various other trades to include plastering, painting, brickwork and roofing skills. The post holder will also assist the Operational managers/technicians with the co-ordination and supervision of external contractors to inc. H&S inductions/compliance, works supervision, co-ordination of any construction phase amendments, Inspection of contractor works at completion stage and relevant reporting of issues. This position is essential to ensure that the college's property remains safe, well-maintained, and conducive to the educational and administrative needs of the institution.

Key Responsibilities
  • Undertake maintenance work requests for day to day repairs, minor works and planned maintenance works. This will include responsibility for faultfinding and repairing a wide range of building elements and undertaking elements of multi-skilling to include Fire doors, Locks and security, Roofing repairs and associated Leaks, Minor developments, Window installation/repairs and any other associated building skills and maintenance activities. Mark out accurately and construct from drawings and plans.
  • Have good knowledge of current building regulations.
  • Understand and receive technical instructions from Estates department operational managers and technicians.
  • Liaise and co-operate with Estates department operational managers and technicians on a daily basis.
  • Communicate effectively with Estates and other college staff to address maintenance-related concerns or inquiries.
  • Assist with the coordinating of external contractors/suppliers to ensure work is performed correctly.
  • Assist with the monitoring of contractors and undertake post work inspections including preparing defects reports where necessary.
  • Inspect and survey work on site as requested, produce material and equipment requisitions to assist the planning the scope of work to be carried out.
  • Ensure acceptable standards of productivity, completion of tasks within required timescale and high workmanship levels.
  • Assist with general maintenance administration of the estates department.
  • Ensure all duties are carried out in compliance with current Health and Safety Legislation
  • Visit all the college campuses when required, in pursuit of the effective operation of the post.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records through the use of an estates computer aided facilities management system and the use of Microsoft or similar administration software.
  • Prepare reports detailing work progress, completed tasks, and upcoming projects as necessary.
  • Work occasionally outside normal working hours to attend emergencies
  • Attend training in order to effectively undertake work activities

Skills Knowledge and ExpertiseEssential Criteria:
  • City & Guilds Level 3 Advanced Craft in Carpentry and Joinery or NVQ L3 in Site Carpentry or equivalent
  • Experience within the construction industry and/or estates environment
  • Experience (post-apprenticeship) of a wide range of Carpentry and general maintenance activities
  • Experience of working with contractors & external agencies
  • Competence in the use of a range of IT systems with experience of spreadsheets and databases.
  • Experience of Health & Safety related issues
Desirable Criteria:
  • HNC in Building Studies or Estates/Facilities Management
Welsh Language Requirements:
  • Welsh Oracy (Listening/Speaking) - Level 0/1
  • Welsh Literacy (Writing/Reading) - Level 0/1
