The position of Welsh Language Delivery Mentor sits in the Principalship of Planning, Learners and Communication and is vitally important to ensure that the FE Group achieves its vision and strategic goals. Working with the Director of Bilingualism, and curriculum-based leaders, the Welsh Language Delivery Mentor will provide support for all bilingual and Welsh-medium teaching and learning matters within Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol's priority sector subject areas with a focus on training and support of teaching staff within those areas. A priority for this post is to ensure that the standards of bilingual teaching and learning are continuously improving and that high-quality staff development and training is provided for all staff, including specialist support for those staff whose professional performance is being scrutinised. The Welsh Language Delivery Mentor will be a member of staff demonstrating excellence and innovation in their day-to-day bilingual teaching and learning practice.

Key Responsibilities
  • Promote and develop excellence in bilingual teaching and learning;
  • Work with individuals and course teams to develop and share the very best practice in bilingual teaching and learning;
  • Support and mentor new and established teachers in improving all aspects of their performance and support them through the Basic Better Best model;
  • Mentor new members of staff through their respective induction and probation periods in bilingual teaching and learning;
  • Undertake observations of teaching staff within Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol's priority subject areas as agreed with the Director of Bilingualism;
  • Provide coaching and mentoring support to improve bilingual teaching delivery methods for new staff within the priority subject areas;
  • Provide feedback to priority subject area staff following observations and support them in their development through a process of coaching and mentoring following the Basic Better Best model;
  • Contribute to the development of the central resources on the Cymraeg Google site and support the delivery and roll out of the resources;
  • Contribute to and undertake continuing professional development activities relevant to bilingual delivery and arising from the observation of teaching and learning roles;
  • Maintain accurate records and produce action plans and reports concerning the development of bilingual teaching and learning;
  • Contribute and coordinate bilingual Teaching and Learning work as is relevant and appropriate and sits in line with the Directorate work plan;
  • Support the assessment of Welsh-medium learner work where necessary;
  • Attend Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol's Paneli Pwnc.

Skills Knowledge and ExpertiseEssential Criteria:
  • Relevant degree or equivalent qualification
  • Teaching qualification
  • GCSE Welsh at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent
  • GCSE English and Mathematics at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent
  • Successful experience of teaching a wide range of learners at different levels and consistently delivering bilingually in own graded lesson observations
  • Experience of post-Cert Ed or equivalent experience
  • Successful experience of making significant improvements in students' Welsh language skills
  • Experience of mentoring or coaching
  • Knowledge of key developments that impact on bilingual learning and teaching in Further/Higher Education
  • Knowledge of LA26 codings C1-B3 and how to support learners to move along the continuum
  • Knowledge and understanding of effective bilingual teaching methods and strategies that ensure high levels of student engagement and effective learning
  • Ability to use main features of Microsoft Office and Google suite of programmes as well as Welsh language online support tools
  • Experience of successful use of e-learning and Welshlanguage ILT strategies
  • Enthusiasm for developing and promoting successful and innovative bilingual practice in teaching and learning
  • Ability to lead individuals and teams to the development of high standards in teaching and learning
  • Ability to make sound and robust judgments about bilingual teaching methods using available evidence
  • Ability to give formal, constructive and critical feedback to peers and colleagues
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to write clear and concise reports

Desirable Criteria:
  • Experience of observing learning and teaching and giving formal and constructive feedback to peers and other colleagues

Welsh Language Requirements:

  • Welsh Oracy (Listening/Speaking) - Level 3/4
  • Welsh Literacy (Writing/Reading) - Level 3/4
