Teacher of Science

Salary: Teacher Pay Scale + ALN Allowance (£2,728 per annum)

Start Date: 1st September 2025

The Governing Body at Maesgwyn Special School wish to appoint a passionate and dedicated Science Teacher to join our team.

We welcome applications from committed and motivated practitioners from both special and mainstream backgrounds (primary or secondary). While experience in Additional Learning Needs (ALN) is an advantage, it is not essential.

This is an exciting opportunity to teach Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 pupils with a range of additional learning needs. At KS3, pupils follow the Curriculum for Wales working from progression step 1 to 3, while at KS4 pupils work towards the WJEC entry pathways science qualification; however, we are excited about recruiting a candidate with the passion to introduce the new wave of science qualifications in Wales ready for 2027.

Maesgwyn Special School is a vibrant and inclusive learning community for pupils aged 11-19 with complex learning difficulties, including autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), moderate to severe learning difficulties, physical difficulties, and Behaviour, Emotional & Social Difficulties (BESD).

Our ethos is rooted in wellbeing, ensuring that every learner feels supported, valued, and empowered to achieve their full potential. We offer a balanced academic and vocational curriculum, enabling our pupils to develop the skills, confidence, and resilience needed for lifelong success. Our goal is to “bring out the best” in every learner, fostering ambitious, capable individuals who contribute meaningfully to society.

We take pride in our strong relationships between staff and pupils, creating a nurturing environment where emotional wellbeing and therapeutic support are at the heart of everything we do. As a school committed to innovative teaching and learning, we work collaboratively to develop and refine best practices, ensuring high-quality educational experiences tailored to our learners’ needs.

At Maesgwyn, we inspire our pupils to become healthy, confident learners and ethically informed citizens of Wales and the wider world, ready to embrace the opportunities of the future.

We are looking for a dedicated Science teacher who:

  • Is a consistently good to outstanding practitioner with a strong understanding of effective pedagogy.
  • Has a passion for teaching and learning and is committed to raising standards for all pupils.
  • Can motivate and inspire pupils of all abilities to achieve their full potential in Science.
  • Has high expectations for pupil progress, engagement, and behaviour.
  • Is skilled in delivering engaging, practical, and interactive science lessons that foster curiosity and a love for learning.
  • Is committed to ongoing professional development and reflective practice.
  • Works effectively as part of a team and contributes to the wider life of the school.
  • Is adaptable, innovative, and willing to embrace new approaches in teaching and assessment.
  • Prioritises pupil wellbeing, creating a safe, nurturing, and supportive learning environment where all students feel valued and empowered.
  • Understands and implements the latest wellbeing practices, recognising the link between emotional health and academic success.
What We Offer:

  • A positive and supportive working environment focused on pupil progress and well-being.
  • Access to high-quality resources and facilities to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Opportunities for professional growth within a strong, committed team.
