WHY TEACH IN WALES?
Go further with teaching. Develop your career with training, there’s support throughout to help you on the journey.
Feel secure in your career. Start as a Newly Qualified Teacher on £32,400 a year. Work your way up to Headteacher and earn up to £140,600 a year.
HOW TO BECOME A TEACHER
Working in education is the first step. Take the next one and get your Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)!
You can study for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at universities across Wales, with full-time ITE programmes on offer at:
- Bangor University
- Cardiff Partnership
- Swansea University
- University of South Wales (USW) – primary only
- Yr Athrofa (University of Wales Trinity St David, Carmarthen and Swansea)
Need more flexibility? You can carry on earning while you qualify as a teacher. The Open University offers a Part Time PGCE, and a Salaried PGCE where you can train whilst working at a school.
FUNDING
You could be eligible for financial incentives to support you while you train:
- £15,000 to study to teach a secondary Priority Subject
- £5,000 for student teachers from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds
- £5,000 to study to teach secondary in Welsh, PLUS your university could offer their own support for teaching in Welsh.
If you complete three years of teaching secondary in Welsh, you could receive a £5,000 retention bursary.
Information about funding for postgraduate Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes can also be found on the Student Finance Wales website.
QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED
- Mathematics and English or Welsh GCSE grade C or equivalent.
- Primary teachers also require a C grade in GCSE Science.
- You will also need an appropriate university degree to apply to a PGCE programme.
Your chosen university can provide guidance on relevant qualifications and specific ITE eligibility.
