What financial help is available for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic students?


The grant is offered by the Welsh Government to increase the number of teachers from ethnic minorities in Wales, so that Welsh learners have a more diverse education workforce.


£5,000 is available to students studying a PGCE course (a Postgraduate Certificate in Education) leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Who is eligible for the grant?
If you would like to discuss whether you are eligible, or would like to apply for the grant, you will need to contact your Initial Teacher Education (ITE) provider. You can study a Secondary or Primary PGCE course for this grant and it is available for full-time and part-time courses. 
To be eligible for the grant, you must:
  • follow an eligible programme*
  • not already be a qualified teacher when starting your course

  • not be employed to teach in a school or other establishment as a teacher

  • not be a participant in training organised under an employment-based teacher training scheme including the Salaried PGCE (The Open University)
  • identify as a student from one of the following ethnic groups:

Asian, Black, Black British, Caribbean, or African, Mixed or multi ethnic groups, Arab, Gypsy or Irish Traveller, Roma

*For a PGCE programme to qualify, it must:

  • be a full or part-time, primary or secondary postgraduate ITE programme in Wales leading to QTS.

When are the payments made?

The grant is paid in two instalments.
The first payment of £2,500 is paid when the student has successfully completed a PGCE course and achieved QTS status. The second payment of £2,500 is paid after successfully completing the Induction Period in Wales.
