Job information
Post No. POSN003385 - Teaching Assistant Level 3 - Bassaleg School

Required for immediate start (fixed term until 31 August 2025 in first instance): Level 3 Teaching Assistant to support the learning of pupils who have additional needs as a consequence of adverse childhood experiences, attachment needs or developmental trauma.

An extremely rare opportunity has arisen to employ a Level 3 Learning Support Assistant with exceptional communication skills to work closely alongside the ALNCO and Relational Support Officer in their support of pupils whose complex additional needs are a consequence of adverse childhood experiences, attachment needs or developmental trauma. The successful candidate will work from Cysur, a bespoke learning provision created solely to support pupils with the aforementioned needs. Support is offered to pupils both in class and through withdrawal whereby the successful candidate would be responsible for: supporting a pupil’s emotional regulation at points of dysregulation, planning and delivering relevant intervention programmes; acting as an advocate for pupils; liaising closely with relevant external agencies; forging close links with parents/carers/teachers and supporting the review of pupil progress via person centred planning.

Bassaleg School is a successful, thriving 11-18 mixed comprehensive school in which pupils have very positive attitudes towards their learning and are supported fully in all aspects of wellbeing. At Bassaleg we prioritise the development of outstanding learning and teaching alongside wellbeing; both lie at the very heart of our ethos. In an environment in which all members of the school community are cared for, valued and listened to, we support and challenge our students to aspire to be the very best that they can be; enabling them to be responsible, capable and ambitious citizens. We have the highest expectations of our pupils and staff; we are very proud of pupils’ attainment across all key stages and of the dynamic and supportive learning community we have created, as an ‘Innovation School’ for the new curriculum.

At an exciting time in Welsh Education, we pride ourselves on being able to provide an inspired, creative and ambitious curriculum for all of our learners. Anyone choosing to join our school community would be rewarded with extensive Professional Learning opportunities; our friendly team of highly skilled and enthusiastic staff are supported by motivated pupils and an active body of parents and Governors.

Bassaleg School site has recently undergone transformational developments with significant improvement being made to our current facilities alongside the creation of a new build boasting state-of-the-art music and drama facilities, science labs, professional learning areas, whole school restaurant and hall with a suite of brand new classrooms to accommodate all Areas of Learning thus ensuring that our environment and resources fully reflect the innovation and creativity within our curriculum and dynamic pedagogical approaches.

Preferably, the successful candidate will have:

- prior experience of working within a similar role
- prior experience in taking a trauma informed or ELSA approach towards a pupil’s needs
- prior experience of person centred planning
- prior experience of using a PACE approach
- prior experience of using NVR strategies
- a very good sense of humour and an ability to always separate the child from the child’s behaviour

A dedicated and friendly ALN team look forward to offering a very warm welcome to the successful candidate.

We welcome applications for all our jobs in either Welsh or English. An application submitted in Welsh will not be treated less favourably than an application submitted in English.

Newport City Council is committed to working towards its workforce being more representative of the population that we serve and particularly welcomes applications from people from the minority ethnic communities represented (or living) in the city. Selection will be made on ability and skills to undertake the role.
