The Estates Department is responsible for reactive and planned maintenance of College buildings, large capital projects, minor works, legislative compliance, environmental management, estates data, Catering, Campus Offices, Transport and grounds maintenance. The post provides an exciting and challenging opportunity for pro-active and innovative person within the Estates Department of Coleg Sir Gâr and Coleg Ceredigion.

A Grounds Maintenance Operative plays a critical role in supporting the daily operations and maintenance of a college's physical infrastructure that includes grounds and buildings. This position is essential to ensure that the college's property remains safe, well-maintained, and conducive to the educational needs of the institution. The post holder will provide grounds maintenance support and be required to deal with a wide range of duties as detailed below -

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate horticultural equipment;
  • Undertake routine grounds maintenance work as directed by Line Manager;
  • Undertake repair and improvement works to soft and hard landscaping on all
  • campuses;
  • Contribute to the effective development of the college grounds;
  • Undertake regular maintenance work to the college playing fields including the preparation of sports pitches in response to college fixtures and training requirements;
  • Assist with maintenance works to the Artificial Terrain Pitch (ATP) at Graig Campus, Llanelli;
  • Contribute to the maintenance, repair and servicing of horticulture and grounds equipment;
  • Assist with and operate Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWP) and use of work related
  • equipment;
  • Assist with general maintenance and repairs to property, fixtures, fittings and equipment as directed by the Estates department;
  • Prepare, transport and assist with setting up displays at College events
  • Use college vehicles as and when required for various duties. Ensure vehicles are kept
  • clean and that the regular checks are undertaken;
  • Preparation of Health & Safety COSHH and risk assessments;
  • Complete all necessary paper work as requested and forward as appropriate;
  • Advise colleagues and Operational Managers of any works required to the College estates Grounds and /or to college machinery and equipment;
  • Advise colleagues and Operation Managers of any damage to grounds and property;
  • Implement the College Environment Policy;
  • Perform all duties with minimal interference to college work or classes at all times;
  • Promote a professional image of the grounds maintenance team and Coleg Sir Gâr & Coleg Ceredigion
  • Complete a range of training courses (Where required) to include, but not exclusive, trailer towing, spraying activities, chainsaw use, hedge cutters, H&S, First aid at work and other grounds maintenance related areas.
  • Assist and work harmoniously with external contractors;
  • Advise of material requirements to undertake activities and collect from appropriate outlets;
  • Undertake such other duties as directed by grounds maintenance colleagues, Technicians or Operational Mangers commensurate with the grade of post

Skills Knowledge and ExpertiseEssential Criteria:
  • Relevant experience in amenity ground maintenance work
  • Experience of operating, maintaining and repairing horticultural machinery
  • Ability to organise and plan allocated work effectively
  • Good analytical skills
  • High degree of self motivation
  • Diplomacy and tact
  • Ability to produce work of high quality
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to display confidence and establish positive relationships
  • Basic IT related skills
  • A current driving license and access to a car - should the College vehicle to unavailable for use
Desirable Criteria:
  • Grounds Maintenance qualification
  • Additional qualifications - Grounds maintenance related qualifications e.g. spraying, chainsaw use, hedge cutters etc
  • Assisting estates management maintenance staff
Welsh Language Requirements:
  • Welsh Oracy (Listening/Speaking) - Level 0/1
  • Welsh Literacy (Writing/Reading) - Level 0/1
