Salary: Grade 11 (£40,221 x 77.15%) + Special Class Allowance

A post has arisen for a dynamic, flexible and enthusiastic Therapeutic Practitioner at Ty Gwyn Education Centre.

Ty Gwyn Education Centre is a secondary age Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) located in a newly refurbished building in the Aberdare area, serving the whole of RCT and learners from age 11 to 16 years.

Ty Gwyn Education Centre offers specialist provision for up to 60 learners with behavioural, emotional and social needs that cannot be met in their mainstream school. Learners are a mixture of full and part time (KS3 only) and access a broad and balanced curriculum of core subjects (English, Maths and Science) and a range of vocational and foundation subjects. Ty Gwyn is a trauma informed setting and has trained staff extensively in this area, we are now formally establishing the therapeutic team at this exciting time, this post will be providing leadership for this team.

As the Therapeutic Practitioner, you will be supporting and guiding children and young people to make positive choices and engage in learning. You will be a role model, a lifelong learner and a trusted responsible figure. You will providing leadership and support to the Therapeutic Team to facilitate their responses to need dynamically and supporting their planning and delivering recognised interventions to develop social skills and support emotional well-being. You will manage the more complex situations and carry out some more detailed work yourself. You will need to be able to use ICT proficiently to record and share important information and contribute to reports and meetings in this area.

You will be required to:

  • To provide therapeutic interventions to assist children and young people to recover from trauma and develop trust in adults and accept help and support
  • To enable children and young people to build safe and positive relationships with peers
  • To enable children and young people to develop strategies to manage their emotions and develop better mental health to overcome barriers to progress
  • To support children and young people to engage in learning and self-development, helping them become healthy and confident individuals
  • To develop and deliver trauma-informed approaches for the benefit of children and young people across Ty Gwyn
  • To design, deliver and review 1:1 therapeutic intervention for individual children and young people affected by recent or historic trauma or adverse experiences that have not been resolved
  • To monitor the progress of individual learners
  • To ensure appropriate written records are kept of sessions, assessments, planning and progress
  • To ensure that Ty Gwyn offers a therapeutic environment to best meet the needs of children and young people
