We're looking for qualified Teachers, registered with the Education Workforce Council, to take up the opportunity to become an External Mentor to support our Newly Qualified Teachers (NQT's) within Neath Port Talbot Schools.

This initiative supports NQTs employed on short-term supply to work with an external mentor (EM) working on a local/regional basis.

As an External Mentor, you will observe the NQT and work with an External Verifier to ensure the NQT receives high-quality mentoring and you will also undertake the final assessment of the NQT by making a written recommendation to the Appropriate Body once you are satisfied that the NQT has undertaken the statutory induction period and has demonstrated achievement of the professional standards.

The majority of NQTs will take three terms or equivalent in sessions to successfully complete induction.

Duties include (but not limited to):

  • Writing development priorities.
  • Progress reviews.
  • Brokering appropriate professional learning.
  • Providing guidance in writing experiences (demonstrating progress against the professional standards for teaching and learning).
  • Observing lessons.
  • Providing guidance in relation to completion of the induction profile.
  • Quality assuring induction processes.
  • Hosting meetings with NQTs.
  • Meeting with the Appropriate Body.
  • Making written recommendations about the progress of NQTs.

Applicants must possess the following:-

  • Hold Qualified Teacher Status.
  • Be registered with Education Workforce Council.
  • Have up to date knowledge of Curriculum for Wales, other key national priorities, and statutory arrangements.
  • Have a track record in mentoring and supporting teachers.
  • Have good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Be highly organised.
  • Be a confident user of digital systems.
  • Be able to travel to various schools (both within and out of county).
