Teaching Assistant (Support Worker) - Pupil Referral Unit

Torfaen Local Authority

Salary: Grade 5 | SCP 11-17 | £25,979 - £28,770 PRO RATA

Torfaen Pupil Referral Unit opened in June 2009 to provide education for children and young people experiencing social, emotional, and/or behavioural difficulties, those who have been permanently excluded or are awaiting a managed move, or those whose anxiety or medical needs prevent them from attending school.

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the PRU to appoint a dynamic and inspiring L3 teaching assistant. The successful candidates must be resilient, creative and flexible with a desire to become key members of the school team. The role will include working under the guidance of the teaching staff and members of the School Leadership Team in order to support the delivery of the curriculum in KS3 and KS4.

You will work under guidance, to provide support in addressing the needs of students who need specific support to overcome barriers to learning. You will support individuals and groups of students to enable access to learning and assist the teacher to manage students within the classroom and beyond. Occasionally you will supervise whole classes during the teacher's short-term absence. Outreach work and contacting and visiting a mainstream school can also be part of this role

You will have a Level 3 NVQ for Teaching Assistants or an equivalent qualification. Patience, understanding, a caring attitude and the ability to provide support and build positive relationships are essential in this role.

You will be a team player who can organise and plan your own time with initiative. If you are motivated by how children learn and can inspire our children then we look forward to hearing from you.

As this is a term time post holidays must be taken during school closures. The appointment process will include an interview with members of the school's leadership team and a selection of Management Committee Members.

If you have the enthusiasm and desire to work in a progressive and innovative environment, Torfaen PRU would welcome your application. For an informal discussion about the post please contact the Head Teacher, Sarah Pugh or the Inclusion manager, Viv Hunt on 01495 742859.
