The translation team delivers an internal translation service for the Executive team, teaching staff and support staff across the seven College campuses. The role of the senior translator is to coordinate and oversee the work of the translation team in an effective way, ensuring deadlines are met and high quality translation is maintained at all times. They will have a keen eye for detail and have the ability to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines. They will have the capability of confidently translating documents from English to Welsh as well as from Welsh to English. Documents can be varied, ranging from learning resources for the broad range of curriculum areas, College policies, administrative documents and posts for social media. The unit uses Wordfast translation memory software. Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills are required as the postholder will be required to manage the departmental workflow and to liaise with staff across the College on a regular basis.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work as an effective and flexible member of the team in order to provide an efficient and accurate
    translation service to all staff at Coleg Sir Gâr and Coleg Ceredigion.
  • Effectively manage all of the College translation requirements, both academic and administrative, from
    English into Welsh and vice-versa using the internal online translation request system.
  • Co-ordinate the workload of other translators in the team
  • Proofread samples of work translated by the team for quality assurance purposes
  • Co-ordinate the production of translated material at an appropriate linguistic level dependent on target audience.
  • Carry out translation of the highest level, checking and proofreading prior to returning.
  • Be a member of the College's Welsh Language Group, providing advice and support as required, and of any other college group as determined by the Head of Library Services and Welsh Language Standards.
  • Ensure consistency in all translations produced with regards to terminology and standards, both for internal and external use
  • Respond to translation requests received by email and transfer these to the internal electronic system.
  • Utilise their research skills in order to effectively research the translation for new, unfamiliar or
    technical terms
  • Be competent in using translation memory software. The College uses Wordfast.
  • Liaise with other Welsh colleges and external agencies on developments relating to the service as identified by the Wales Assembly Government and the Welsh Language Commissioner.
  • To act as co-ordinator for any external translation should the need arise for us to use external services and, from time to time, proofread work that has been translated by staff outside the unit to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Liaise with the College's internal staff as necessary to discuss the details of their requests
  • Be responsible for resourcing the Translation Unit.
  • Assist the College in promoting and maintaining its bilingual ethos with regards to the use of the Welsh language by providing a comprehensive, widely accessible service.
  • Carry out any other duties as directed by the Principal/Chief Executive commensurate with the grade of the post at the initial place of work or other locations within the College.

Skills Knowledge and ExpertiseEssential Criteria:
  • Degree or post-graduate qualification in Welsh
  • Membership of Association of Welsh Translators (if not a current member - membership should be achieved within 12 months of employment)
  • Relevant experience of translation (preferably within the education sector)
  • Experience of working in partnership with external agencies
  • Experience of using translation memory software
  • Competence in the use of a range of IT systems and packages up include Google Suite
  • Good research skills
  • Good communicator with diplomacy and tact
  • Good interpersonal and organisational skills
  • High level of personal integrity and confidentiality
  • Ability to work harmoniously with colleagues
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • Good presentational skills
Desirable Criteria:
  • Experience of managing a translation facility
  • Experience of using Wordfast translation software
  • Experience as a Simultaneous translator
  • An understanding of developments in FE and HE
Welsh Language Requirements:
  • Welsh Oracy (Listening/Speaking) - Level 4
  • Welsh Literacy (Writing/Reading) - Level 4
