DescriptionAre you passionate about culinary arts and supporting the next generations of the catering and hospitality industry? Do you possess strong technical skills in food preparation, kitchen management, and equipment maintenance? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you as a General Kitchen Assistant at Coleg Sir Gâr.
This is a wonderful opportunity for a dedicated and efficient individual to join the team at our Cegin Sir Gâr catering facility on our Pibwrlwyd Campus in Carmarthen. Cegin Sir Gâr is Coleg Sir Gâr's training facility for aspiring chefs and maître d' staff. The restaurant, which offers a table d'hote menu, has a long-established reputation for the quality of its food and service where restaurant quality gastronome can be enjoyed at reasonable prices.
The role is to provide technical assistance to support the smooth running of practical teaching sessions and Restaurant Service. This role would be well suited to someone who is a great communicator with interpersonal and organisational skills along with the ability to work flexibly alongside both colleagues and learners.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical assistance, support, materials and equipment for teaching staff and learners;
- Maintain high levels of hygiene during kitchen and restaurant preparation / clean down and a clean and safe working environment, complying with Health and Safety regulations;
- Clean and maintain equipment as planned, required or requested to ensure smooth running of catering and hospitality department, receiving relevant training as and when necessary;
- Maintain correct storage of foodstuffs, beverages, equipment and materials within stores in accordance with the requirements of college procedures and Health and Safety;
- Support and work alongside the technician and to (when necessary) order foodstuffs, beverages, equipment and materials ;
- File delivery notes and complete paperwork within the stores system in accordance with departmental and financial procedures;
- Handle and control petty cash in accordance with financial procedures;
- Handle monies from food sales in accordance with financial procedures;
- Maintain an inventory of all items, keeping records of breakages and losses;
- Ensure Catering facilities are clean and tidy at all times;
- Support the coordination of laundry services;
- Participate in course team and curriculum area meetings as required
Skills Knowledge and ExpertiseEssential Criteria:
- Relevant experience of the technical field/s concerned
- Be competent in the use of the kitchen equipment and machinery
- Good communicator with diplomacy and tact
- Good interpersonal and organisational skills
- Ability to work harmoniously with students and colleagues
- Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
- Good presentational skills
- NVQ Level 2 Qualification in a Catering & Hospitality or industry related qualification (or willingness to undertake appropriate training)
- GCSE English and Mathematics at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent
- Appropriate Health & Safety training (or willingness to undertake appropriate training)
- First Aid qualification (If you are not First Aid qualified, you may be expected to undertake training)
- A good understanding of the technical support role in Further & Higher Education
- Ability to work flexibly
- Welsh Oracy (Listening/Speaking) - Level 0/1
- Welsh Literacy (Writing/Reading) - Level 0/1
