Situated at the Cardigan campus, our areas have access to industry standard facilities and equipment which include a commercial hair and beauty salon.

The faculty ensures it works together to meet the vision of the College where values and behaviours are at the core . We offer a wide range of enrichment opportunities for our learners and support our staff in their teaching and learning journey where they have the opportunity to develop their pedagogy.

The Hair and Beauty department run vibrant programmes for their learners to provide them with a clear understanding of this sector in order to progress into employment and/or higher education. They offer full time and part time courses from Level 1 through to Level 3 as well as part-time barbering courses. The department have strong links with stakeholders that are able to provide industry links to all of our learners at all levels of their learning. A commercial salon is based on campus and gives the learners an opportunity to get a real sense of the industry whilst being mentored by our staff in preparation for the industry.

Key Responsibilities
  • Undertake the teaching, assessment and coordination of programmes of study leading to qualifications within VTCT in Hair and Barbering at L1 through to L3 within college and local partners schools;
  • Work with receptionist and managers to ensure that commercial salons are running effectively and to support practical assessments as well as being profitable. This must also include target setting and sales incentives for all learners to be able to promote to our client base. Support the receptionist in building a vibrant profitable client base;
  • Work with Hair and Beauty colleagues, managers, directors and stakeholders to ensure an effective learner programme of industry related workshops and masterclasses making sure that learners have a wide range of opportunities to engage with the hair and beauty industry;
  • Ensure innovation within planning, delivery and assessments in both the practical and theoretical work using digital technology within salons;
  • Prepare learners for entering competitions both Nationally and Internationally, mentoring the learners through the process and accompany learners when required;
  • Lead/accompany learner trips to a range of locations in line with the demands of the course specifications;
  • Share good practice to support CPD within the Hair and Beauty team;
  • Plan and effectively carry out quality assurance activities following the quality calender within Hair and Beauty;
  • Promote full and part time curriculum courses and commercial salon to a wide variety of stakeholders;
  • Contribute to developing extra-curricular activities.

Skills Knowledge and ExpertiseEssential Criteria:
  • A relevant degree or equivalent qualification
  • Teaching qualification (If you are not in possession of a teaching qualification as at the date of employment, you will be required to obtain a PGCE within 2 years of this date)
  • GCSE English & Maths at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent
  • Documented evidence of ongoing appropriate Professional Development
  • L1 -L3 Hair and Barbering
  • Relevant teaching experience
  • A good understanding of relevant issues in post 16 education
  • A proven track record of high levels of learner attainment
  • Awareness of key performance indicators
  • Evidence of innovative teaching and learning activities
  • Evidence of effective tracking and monitoring of learner performance
  • Experience of actively participating in the pastoral care of young people
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills and ability to communicate effectively at all levels both orally and in writing
  • Sound understanding of digital literacy
  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Ability to work harmoniously with learners and colleagues
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Excellent punctuality and ability to work flexibly

Desirable Criteria:
  • An assessor qualification
  • L4 Award in Internal Quality Assurance Qualification
  • Willingness to drive a college minibus

Welsh Language Requirements:

  • Welsh Oracy (Listening/Speaking) - Level 0/1
  • Welsh Literacy (Writing/Reading) - Level 0/1
