RELEVANT QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING

ESSENTIAL

• Level 3 qualification in Youth Work must be completed within the first two years in post
• Experience of working with young people on a one-to-one basis
• Experience of working with groups of young people
• Wide-ranging experience of providing accredited training
• Knowledge of accreditation of schemes by external bodies (ASDAN, Wales Open, Duke of Edinburgh Award, John Muir, BTEC, Children's University).

DESIRABLE

• Qualification, or working towards a qualification in Assessing Accreditations.
• Level 3 qualification in Youth Work.

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL

• Extensive experience in presenting and delivering accreditation programmes in an informal context.
• Evidence of success in working with young people and adults in an informal education setting.

Listening and Speaking - Higher Level
Able to follow a conversation or discussion through the medium of Welsh and English on a professional level and discuss general day to day topics in the field in order to present information and express opinions. Able to give a pre-prepared presentation and respond to any comments and questions on it in Welsh or English.

Reading and Understanding - Higher Level
Able to understand standard written Welsh and English; both formal and informal. Able to gather information from various sources such as letters, reports, articles through the medium of Welsh and English in order to fulfil the post.

Writing - Higher Level
Present written information confidently by letter, more detailed and technical report formats, and respond to written requests conveying information, ideas and opinion in Welsh and English (help is available to check the work).

Job Description

Purpose of the Post.

• Ensure that the people of Gwynedd are at the heart of everything we do.
• Planning, coordinating and providing a program of activities and projects for young people based on catchment area
• Building wide networks so that this work can be developed to the maximum.
• Collaborate with the rest of the Youth Service Team to ensure that the youth support work transitions smoothly into the community youth work
• Implement a program of activities and projects ensuring the best experience for young people

Responsibility for functions . e.g. staff, budgets, equipment

• The Youth Worker will be responsible for the supervision and organisation of the projects. They will also be responsible for equipment ensuring that it meets health and safety requirements.

Main Duties

• Work directly with young people to develop their social skills by offering a wide program of activities that lead to accreditation / qualification during school time and that transition to the community

• Prepare, organize, plan, evaluate, organize and manage resources for each project

• To ensure a space where a young person has the opportunity to enjoy themselves, feel safe, get support, be valued, learn how to take control of their lives recognizing and opposing harmful influences that can affect them

• Building a positive relationship with the Schools' Pastoral Team and the Youth Service Team

• Provide a program of activities / projects in the schools during school term and community provision during school holidays

• Attend standardization and training meetings organized by awarding bodies

• Presentation of the Duke of Edinburgh Award in Schools

• Develop a range of learning opportunities for young people using informal methods of youth work, within the school and the community, which are suitable for the needs of the young people.

• Introducing accreditation programs in the schools and in the communities

• Enable young people to access recognized achievements (e.g. ASDAN Youth Challenge and Youth Achievement Schemes, Agored Cymru, Duke of Edinburgh Award, John Muir Award, Children's University

• Motivate young people by giving them a sense of achievement and recognition

• Collaborate with School Staff, Education Department, YOTs, Social Services and Community Safety and other agencies that can be beneficial in supporting a young person.

• Ensure that a clear and accurate record of work is fed into the information management system in accordance with the requirements of all the relevant agencies, and in accordance with the requirements of the respective agencies' policies and systems.

• Attend the planning meetings of the schools and the youth service, review meetings etc. as needed

• Attend moderation and training meetings organized by awarding bodies, and to cascade information about new developments to other members of the youth work team

• Comply with any procedures and systems of the Service

• Develop and expand the projects curriculum by fostering links with agencies and providers including consulting with young people, working together with schools and other education providers

• Responsibility for entering any information required for the information collection system

• Coordinating with the Occupational Standards for Youth Work, the Rights of the Child

• Prepare progress reports on his/her work

• Attend Youth Service meetings taking full part in the discussions and sharing information with the teams

• Organise and host events, provide projects and activities during school holidays together with the Community Workers

• Search for grants in order to develop the work further

• Offer volunteering opportunities locally and abroad

• Ensure that any report is completed by the designated time

• Ensuring that a Young person's Voice is heard through everything that is offered and developed

• In liaison with the manager to ensure suitable development of performance measurement and gathering information from work to be able to measure the effectiveness of the plan and achieve objectives set with reporting and planning arrangements.

• Attend training for youth workers organized by, or on behalf of, the Council

• Responsibility for equipment register including Duke of Edinburgh Award equipment to the Accreditation Administrator

• Act as Site Manager at the Manager's request

• Responsibility for self-development.
• Ensure compliance with Health and Safety rules in the workplace in accordance with the responsibilities noted in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Council's Health and Safety Policy.
• Operate within the Council's policies in relation to equal opportunities and equality.
• Responsible for managing information in accordance with the Council's information management guidelines. Ensure that personal information is treated in accordance with Data Protection legislation.
• Commitment to reducing the Council's carbon emissions in accordance with the Carbon Management Plan, and to encourage others to act positively towards reducing the Council's Carbon Footprint.
• Undertake any other reasonable duty which corresponds to the salary level and responsibility level of the job.
• Responsibility to report any concern or suspicion that a child or vulnerable adult is being abused.

Special Circumstances . e.g. the need to work unsociable hours, special working arrangements etc.

• Annual Leave: JNC Terms - 30 days leave for the first 5 years and then 35 days thereafter

• Work hours:

Full Time - The working week: 37 hours a week, no more than 8 evening sessions in a fortnight, and at times it may be required to be flexible in order to meet specific work needs. It will mean working in the evenings (3 nights) together with the occasional weekend which may be residential, within the 37 hours.

Part Time - The working week: 18.5 hours per week, no more than 4 evening sessions per fortnight and at times it may be required to be flexible in order to meet specific work needs. It will mean working in the evening (1/2 night) together with the occasional weekend which may be residential, within the 18.5 hours.

• Hours: The hours to include evening and weekend work and some may be residential

• Car use: The post holder will be designated as an "essential car user"

• Linguistic: The post holder will need to be confident verbally and in writing in Welsh and English from the start.

• Mobile Phone User: A mobile phone will be provided for the purposes of the job.

• Training: A Level 3 course in Youth Work must be completed during the first 2 years of the post

• You will be appointed to a catchment area but you will need to work outside the catchment area as needed e.g. to count holidays, sickness.... .

• We will look again at the job description in one year of the appointment

• The Department has an ongoing program of training and personal skills development. An Evaluation Plan will be implemented which will contribute to this provision. The post holder is expected to participate in the programme. You will follow the training matrix for Field Workers.

• •Your attention is drawn to the fact that in some cases specific duties and responsibilities are difficult to analyse in detail and could change from time to time without changing the general character of the duties or the level of responsibility. In addition, all members of staff are required to accept elements of flexibility in their duties and responsibilities, and when necessary, exchange within the Authority in order to meet the constantly changing needs and requirements of the service. Such a need will enable the specific expertise of the holder to grow and develop for the benefit of the employer and the employee.
