Job information
Post No. POSN004375 - School Support Officer - L3 - Ysgol Bryn Derw

37 Hours per week (Monday to Friday 8am-4pm), 39 weeks per year - Permanent

Ysgol Bryn Derw is a successful and over-subscribed ASD Special School for pupils from across Newport that was newly opened in September 2017. The school currently has 111 pupils aged between 3 and 19, and over 100 staff. The Governing Body is looking to appoint a School Support Officer Level 3 to work in this busy and highly rewarding Special School environment.

We are expanding onto a third site in September 2025 to accommodate additional pupils, and are expanding our support team in response to this. The post-holder will be part of a team of four, all of whom play a key role in the smooth and effective running of the school and in facilitating the vital work of classroom staff. The role will be multi-faceted, and may include school finance, attendance, reception, communication and varied administrative/organisational duties. The post holder will either be based at the site in Melfort Road (Gaer) or Hadrian Close (Caerleon). Experience of school based electronic systems would be beneficial including CIA, iTrent, SIMS, and Parent Pay. The ability to work under pressure is essential, as is the ability to meet key deadlines throughout the year.

You will have excellent literacy and numeracy skills, the ability to deal calmly with different situations as they arise and be able to develop good relationships with pupils, parents and staff.

The appointment process will involve a range of tasks and an interview with the new School Business Manager, members of the school leadership team and a Governor.

We are legally obliged to ask you to provide evidence of your right to work in the UK. If you are invited to interview, you will be asked to provide appropriate documents such as your full birth certificate/passport/work permit in accordance with the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) and is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check).

Closing date: Tuesday 17th June
Shortlisting: Wednesday 18th June
Interview and assessment Date: currently planned for Tuesday 24th June
Start date: Monday 1st September 2025
