The Forestry and Countryside Management department is located at Coleg Glynllifon. Students study full-time level 2 and 3 courses. Students will go on to employment by working for employers who specialize in a number of appropriate fields such as estate maintenance, land maintenance, tree planting, nurturing and harvestings, countryside conservation and processing wood into products. Employers will be forestry and land owners or companies selling related services.With guidance, the Practical Skills Supervisor will work to develop students' understanding and skills by planning practical activities. These tasks follow a plan of work that develops during the term to establish students' competence so they meet the requirements of the course. Part of the work is a formal process of assessing students using examination board criteria, completing this process is an important part of the job.
Students are trained in different aspects of forestry work using Coleg Glynllifon resources. There are 350 acres of diverse forest on site along with a timber processing yard with a range of relevant machinery including an indoor saw mill, wood processing machinery, forestry forwarder and winch as well as smaller machinery such as a chainsaw and brush cutters.
The successful candidate will be required to be familiar with and use a wide range of equipment and processes in a safe manner with experience of working practically in a relevant industry. The successful candidate is expected to take responsibility for ensuring the safety of machinery by inspecting equipment and carrying out maintenance tasks and simple repairs.
The Practical Skills Supervisor will assist and support lecturers to identify and assess learners' progress offering guidance and support. The successful person will assess students on certain aspects of the course against relevant criteria.
