Assistant Educational Psychologist

Neath Port Talbot Council

Salary: Soulbury Scale 2-4 £36,109 - £38,774 per annum

Fixed term contract to 31st August 2026.

We are currently seeking an enthusiastic and committed Assistant Educational Psychologist to join the EPS in Neath Port Talbot Council. In this role, you will play a crucial part in reinforcing a needs-led approach to supporting learners, working within the framework of the Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal (Wales) Act 2018 (ALNET Act). You will contribute to the Directorate's mission to empower children, young people (CYP), parents, carers, and schools by helping them understand and build on individual learning profiles, celebrating strengths and differences within an inclusive, neurodiverse society.

As an Assistant Educational Psychologist, you will work alongside educational psychologists to develop and implement tailored intervention strategies. You will be involved in creating accessible resources for parents, carers, CYP, and schools, ensuring they have the tools to confidently support diverse needs. You will also take an active role in delivering training and workshops to build capacity in educators and families.

A key aspect of the role involves collecting and analyzing data to assess the effectiveness of interventions, ensuring that the support provided has a measurable positive impact on the educational outcomes of CYP. You will also advocate for their needs. Working closely with other professionals, you will help schools implement person-centred approaches, ensuring that educational provision is driven by the needs of the individual.

Do you have:
  • A BPS-accredited degree in psychology (or equivalent) and have a strong commitment to pursuing a career as an educational psychologist, including plans to apply for the doctoral training programme.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, as well as experience working with CYP in educational or clinical settings.
  • Familiarity with inclusive education practices and the ALNET Act.
  • The ability to demonstrate empathy and sensitivity in your interactions with CYP and their families, whilst also working collaboratively with colleagues from across health and education sectors.
We would welcome those with experience in the following roles:
  • Experience working with CYP in educational or clinical settings.
  • Experience in developing and implementing psychological advice and support.
  • Exposure to multidisciplinary teamwork and collaboration with other professionals.
  • Appreciation of the construct of neurodiversity and its implications for educational practice.
  • Familiarity with the ALNET Act and its focus on person-centred approaches.
  • Knowledge of inclusive education practices and the new curriculum in Wales.
  • Awareness of evidence-based intervention strategies for CYP with diverse learning needs.
  • Familiarity/understanding of the role of an educational psychologist and innovative practice that can make a difference to the inclusion of babies, children and young people.
We believe in rewarding and recognising our colleagues' efforts and achievements. We also believe that there's life at work and life outside of work. We want everyone to be healthy and happy and have the financial resources and support they need.

Choose to work for us and you'll be rewarded with a range of attractive benefits and support to help you live your best life.
  • Hybrid working (in some roles) and flexible working schemes to improve your work life balance
  • Benefit from a competitive employee package with a remarkable 22.4% employer pension contribution
  • Enjoy a holiday entitlement of 25 days, increasing to 32 days after 5 years' service (not forgetting the additional 8 bank holidays too)
  • Access discounted gym membership with Celtic Leisure
  • Utilise the cycle to work scheme with up to 40% off bikes and cycling equipment
  • Purchase a new car through Tusker salary sacrifice scheme
