Cardiff and Vale College are looking to appoint a Head of Basketball to lead and develop our Basketball Academy. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and passionate coach to shape a high-performance environment, supporting learners to achieve excellence both on and off the court.The Role
As Head of Basketball, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management and development of the College's basketball programme, ensuring it meets Welsh Basketball standards and delivers a high-quality performance pathway for all players.
You will create a positive, high-performance culture that promotes high standards, supporting students to develop their skills, confidence and aspirations through basketball.
The role includes leading on recruitment, retention and progression of players into the Basketball Academy, as well as developing and implementing a clear playing, training and performance strategy to support both team and individual success.
You will oversee assistant coaches, interns and volunteers, ensuring effective delivery of training and matchday activity, and will manage fixtures, performance analysis, and player development programmes including strength and conditioning.
You will also engage with external stakeholders such as Welsh Basketball and relevant sporting bodies, contribute to cross-college events, and support the promotion of the programme through marketing and reporting activities.
The role requires flexibility, including travel between sites and attendance at fixtures and events.
The successful candidate will be expected to commence in post from 1st July (subject to the completion of pre-employment vetting checks) to support key basketball recruitment and planning activity.
About You
You will be an experienced and motivated basketball coach with a strong track record of delivering high-quality coaching and developing players within a structured programme.
You will have:
- A recognised basketball coaching qualification (Level 2 or above)
- At least 3 years' proven coaching experience
- Strong leadership and organisational skills, with the ability to manage teams and programmes effectively
- The ability to analyse performance data and use insight to drive improvement
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with learners, staff and external stakeholders
You will demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement, equality and inclusion, and be able to work effectively under pressure while managing competing priorities.
The following would also be desirable:
- A relevant sport degree
- A teaching qualification (or willingness to work towards one)
- First aid, safeguarding or officiating qualifications
- A high-level basketball playing background
- Experience working within a school or further education setting
Welsh language skills are desirable; however, a willingness to learn is expected.
