We are looking to recruit a Bilingual Teaching Assistant to support learners in the school.

Job Purpose

• To work under the guidance of the teacher in charge of Language Acquisition and within an
agreed system of supervision.
• To support individuals and groups of learners to enable access to learning.
• To contribute to the teacher’s planning cycle to ensure all learners have equal access to
learning.
Key Results Areas
Support for learners
• Use specialist (curricular/learning) skills/training/experience to support learners.
• Establish purposeful working relationships with learners and engender high expectations.
• Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all learners within the classroom.
• Following training, administer medication in accordance with the procedures for LA and school
policies.
• Support learners consistently while recognising and responding to their individual needs.
• Encourage learners to interact and work cooperatively with others.
• Promote independence and employ strategies to recognise and reward achievement of self?reliance.
• Provide effective feedback to learners in relation to programmes and recognise and reward
achievement, including behaviour and attendance.
• To invigilate internal and external examinations when required.
• Provide interpretation for learners and other ethnic minority parents as appropriate.
• Assist the school in communicating with parents using appropriate community languages
including parents’ evenings.
• Work with small groups of learners on topics specified by the teacher, using the child’s home
language and English as necessary.
• Provide support, as directed, to learners who have English as an additional language
• Provide in-class support to learners who have English as an additional language including
support with translating resources.
• Take part in school initiatives to improve parents and carers participation in school activities.
• Liaise with teaching staff and the Headteacher on general pastoral issues with reference to
ethnic minority learners.
• Give any particular educational and wellbeing support to new arrivals.
Support for the Teacher
• Work with the teacher to create a purposeful, orderly and supportive learning environment.
• Work with the teacher in lesson planning, evaluation and adjusting lessons/work plans as
appropriate.
• Provide the teacher as requested with oral and written feedback on learners’ progress and
achievement.
• As agreed with the teacher, be responsible for keeping and updating records. As requested,
contribute to the review of school record-keeping systems.
Support for the Curriculum
• Implement agreed learning activities and teaching programmes.
• Deliver programmes linked to local learning strategies e.g. English in a Flash
• Make effective use of opportunities provided by other learning activities to support the
development of relevant skills.
• Support the use of ICT in learning activities and develop learners’ competence and
independence in its use.
• Help learners to access learning activities through specialist support.
• Determine the need for, prepare and maintain general and specialist equipment and resources.
• Maintain records and profiles.
• Participate in meetings to discuss the progression of EAL learners, giving feedback on pupil
progress.
• Attend meetings concerning individual learners, as directed by the class teacher or senior
management team.
• Carry out assessments and keep records of learners’ achievements and liaise with colleagues
to exchange and review information, including written records, on the day to day management
of the pupil(s).
Support for the School
• Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to inclusion, child protection,
health, safety and security, behaviour management, confidentiality and data protection,
reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
• Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school.
• Establish purposeful relationships and communicate with other agencies/professionals, in
liaison with the teacher, to support achievement and progress for learners.
• Attend and participate in regular meetings, including staff meetings
• Participate in training and other learning activities as required.
• Recognise your own strengths and areas of expertise and use these to advise and support
others.
• Provide appropriate guidance and supervision and assist in the training and development of
other support staff as appropriate.
• Undertake planned supervision of learners’ out-of-school-hours learning activities.
• Accompany learners on educational visits using the child’s home language where appropriate
to aid access to the curriculum.
Qualifications and Experience
• Experience of working in a multi-ethnic environment.
• Personal experience of a minority ethnic culture and language
• 5 GCSEs grades A - C / NVQ 2 for Teaching Assistants or equivalent
qualification in a relevant discipline including qualifications obtained
abroad which can be ratified
• A minimum of one year's experience of working with or caring for
children of relevant age
• Good numeracy/literacy skills.
• Basic understanding of child development and learning.
• Commitment to further professional development
