About us
The role is part of the Vale of Glamorgan, Hearing Support Service, within the Vale of Glamorgan's Learning and Skills; ALN Directorate. The job is placed within the Hearing Support team and would involve working across the Vale of Glamorgan with pupils from birth to 25. The main focus of the role is providing outreach Teacher of the Deaf services but may also include teaching within the primary and secondary Hearing Resource Bases when required. You would be part of an energetic and supportive team who are passionate about providing a high quality service for pupils with hearing needs.

Work would be across the Vale of Glamorgan for Outreach, and within the Hearing Resource Bases at St Cyres Comprehensive and Cogan Primary when needed.

Description:

The successful applicant will join and support a team of experienced and enthusiastic Teachers of the Deaf, to manage and prioritise an assigned caseload of Deaf children and young people in family homes and educational settings.

The successful applicant will support Deaf children and young people, their families and teachers and work within a range of settings across the Vale of Glamorgan. They will need to be passionate about promoting full inclusion in all aspects of school life and ensuring that deafness is not a barrier to reaching their full potential.

The role involves supporting pupils with a hearing loss to access the curriculum using a variety of communication approaches and enabling them to be fully involved in all aspects of school life, within the school bases and in other educational establishments across the county.

The successful candidate will work with pupils with hearing loss from birth to 25.

About you
You will need:

  • Understanding of the different educational and social needs of pupils with hearing loss and additional learning needs and the impacts of hearing loss on learning.

  • Previous and recent experience of working with children in primary and or secondary school, capable of supporting pupils with Deaf children and young people in ALL curriculum areas.

  • Experience of supporting families with pre-school age Deaf children

  • Ability to work flexibly, and as part of a team in a variety of settings.

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Able to work independently and use initiative.

  • Ability to write reports, clearly and accurately and communicate effectively.

  • Willing and able to learn new skills and to undertake training as required.

  • Understanding of the new Curriculum for Wales and ability to promote pupils' independent learning.

  • Understanding of ALNET and the PCP and IDP processes.

  • Excellent planning and organisational skills.

  • The ability to effectively communicate with all stakeholders.

  • An understanding of how to track pupils' achievements, write targets and make judgements about progress.

  • Teacher of the Deaf Mandatory qualification.

  • BSL Level 1 (minimum) and willing to further develop BSL skills.
