WHAT IS A TEACHER?

We create a learning environment where education comes to life. A place where learners are inspired so they can excel and achieve their goals and ambitions. We ensure that all learners have the skills needed to engage as active citizens within our communities. We inspire, motivate, and build confidence, helping even the most reluctant of learners to succeed in all aspects of education.

We work with a range of learners, from as young as three up until the age of nineteen. We are flexible and adaptable to ensure we are always meeting the needs of our learners. Some of us also specialise in working with learners with additional learning needs. 

Depending on the phase we work in, we can teach a range of areas of learning and experience or focus on a single area. 

Every day, we get to use our training, skills, knowledge and life experience to help learners unlock their true potential. We work in partnership with our colleagues, providing advice and guidance to learning support staff and working together to ensure our learners are ready to learn throughout their lives.

Our responsibilities include planning and preparing lessons and high-quality resources. Because to us, it's more than just science, maths and English - it's literature and landscapes; metalwork and needlework. We're constantly monitoring the progress of our learners, providing valuable feedback and advice while also ensuring the highest standards and behaviour.

We are also an integral part of the wider school community, working collaboratively with colleagues, contributing to staff meetings, promoting professional learning events, and engaging with parents, carers and other support agencies. Because collectively, we believe that we want to create a supportive and stimulating learning environment for the benefit of all involved. 

THE QUALIFICATIONS YOU WILL NEED

In order to qualify as a teacher, it is necessary to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) through Initial Teacher Education (ITE). Students wishing to undertake an ITE qualification must meet the minimum entry requirements. To find out more about entry requirements click here. Once you've gained QTS you'll need to complete an induction period. There are several ITE routes in Wales.

Qualified school teachers from around the world can now apply for recognition in Wales.

From 1 January 2021, any teacher who qualified outside Wales but wants to work in Wales as a qualified school teacher can apply to have their qualifications recognised by the EWC.

Funding

Graduates with relevant degrees may be eligible for an incentive to undertake a PGCE in Wales. If choosing to study through the medium of Welsh an additional £5,000 is available. £5,000 is available for student teachers from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.

There are two types of scholarships available through the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol for students who are studying a BA in Education if you undertake part of your studies through the medium of Welsh. The Incentive Scholarship and the Main Scholarship

Full-time Routes

Part-time Routes

  • The part time PGCE is available for primary and secondary level and will take two years to complete. You will need an honours degree in order to study this route. 

  • This route is ideal if you want to study your PGCE around your current job or other commitments.

  • This route can be self-funded or you can apply for a student loan and part-time maintenance grants to help with the costs.

Salaried Routes
  • If you already work at a school as a learning support worker or in a non-teaching role, and you have an honours degree, you can apply for your school to endorse your study to become a qualified teacher. You will study for your PGCE around your existing school duties, for which you will be paid a salary. Your costs of study will be covered by a training grant from the Welsh Government. 
  • You will work towards a PGCE qualification over two years to meet the Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) standards.
  • You can still apply for the salaried route in secondary shortage subjects if you don’t work in a school, but you’ll need to have a secondary school willing to sponsor you, which The Open University could help you find.
  • The employment based route is available for primary and secondary level.

Teachers with teaching and learning responsibilities and management duties may receive additional pay.
